Migraine is more than a headache, it’s a complex neurologic condition, which affects various parts of the nervous system and causes other non-headache symptoms, which can have a major impact on quality of life. Migraine is the second most common form of primary headache and can have a significant impact on the life of an individual. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Migraine is the sixth highest cause of days lost off work.

It is thought that the root of the migraine is in the brainstem and is a condition of the nervous system creating waves of abnormal electrical activity. When the system does not function properly, sufferers start to experience odd sensations, such as white sparks in an eye, an intense pain in some part of the head, facial and ear pressure, imbalance, body aches, sleep disorders and fatigue and concluding with a long period of nausea and exhaustion.
Migraines affect approx. 2 million Australians and are one of the most common types of headache conditions in adults. Women are three times more likely to suffer with migraines than men, which could indicate a connection with female sex hormones too. Migraines are most common before the age of 40 and around 50% of sufferers have a family history.
Symptoms of migraine:
· A debilitating headache lasting from four up to 72 hours
· Pulsating or throbbing pain, often on one side of the head
· A headache that gets worse when active
· Feeling sick or vomiting
· Sensitivity to light & noise.
With each migraine event, there is an inflammatory reaction, it is understood that the chemicals released from the nerve endings cause blood vessels to swell, contract and leaky and also activates the immune system to become active. Together they cause inflammation within the brain and repeated inflammation causes damage and changes to the neural circuitry.
Many people with migraines, including children, get ineffective and potentially, addictive to drugs for their pain. Researchers found that more than half of adults and 16% of children and teenagers with migraines had been prescribed narcotic painkillers, which are considered last-resort, "rescue" drugs for migraines that won't subside. Both drug classes are potentially addictive, can cause withdrawal symptoms, and may make migraines worse in the long run.
